Semantic Inference

PetaMem, the leading provider of natural language understanding systems, has released a new version of its Machine Translation module for the PetaMem Language Server software suite. A vastly improved engine for semantic inference allows for disambiguation of the translated content based on commonsense knowledge.

All lexica for the PetaMem Language Server contain dictionaries, morphosyntactic and deep semantic information for every entry and are available for all major european languages. The semantic inference feature is available for english, german, spanish, french, italian and czech. More languages will be supported in Q1/2009.

The new semantic inference engine is also immediately available for the Discourse module. With this, chatbots implemented using our technology, derive ad-hoc models of discussion topics and therefore show a deeper "understanding" of the discussion.

"I stated that I prefer to call a car tire a 'ramzip', then asked how many ramzips a car has. The answer was: 'Four - some do have more.'. The system is able to extend and even modify its knowledge base according to user input.", explains Arjan Minski, senior developer at PetaMem.

"With the semantic inference in place, we can clearly see how the system disambiguates the classic 'Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana' - building both hypotheses - and provides a correct translation.", explains Marcel Holan, project manager at PetaMem.
